A legal man himself, John Mortimer provides a hilarious and wicked picture of life in the Old Bailey at the hands of Rumpole, the ageing but ever depending barrister. If Mortimer is sometimes a might careless with continuity - Rumpole's Chambers drift merrily around before finally settling - he his spot on in his observation of the humour underlying the law.
