Ruth
Rendell

Indubitably one of the modern greats, Rendell
imbues her Chief Inspector Wexford books with a warmth and country hospitality lacking in
practically every contemporary. Rendell herself saves her darker side for other books
written under the Barbara Vine pseudonym, keeping Wexford's Kingsmarkham a much more
pleasant place. This is despite the huge range of violent crime that seems to take part in
that corner of South East England. The principle detectives, Wexford and Burden have fully
developed private lives which gives an enjoyable soap opera background to the twists and
turns of the sometimes labyrinthine plots.

Road Rage
: A Chief Inspector Wexford Mystery
Published 1998 Ever one to latch onto
current events, Rendell puts a bypass protest around Kingsmarkham, allowing for the
introduction of a wild and wonderful range of characters. All is not well, though, when
unknown protestors decide to take things into their own hands by taking hostages,
including a well-known character from the Rendell books. At the same time a six-month old
murder of a young woman is being investigated. The ending is a real surprise - in fact
there's so much to pack in it's rather rushed - even so, despite her many books it's one
of Rendell's best. New 6 August 1998
