Back to the Vortex
by J. Shaun Lyon
Unlike most of the books we review in this slot, this isn't true science
fiction, but rather a non-fiction book on a science fiction TV topic.
Back to the Vortex by Shaun Lyon is an in-depth look at the new season
of the perennial and very British TV sci-fi show, Doctor Who.
Though the show had a cult following, and provides fond memories for older
viewers in many countries, early episodes look very dated now. After a long
gap from the schedules (it's nearly 10 years since the rather shaky TV
movie, and even longer since the series last aired), the BBC brought back
Doctor Who in 2005 in a new glossy form for the Buffy the Vampire
Slayer generation - and the result was superb.
Lyon's book gives an in-depth look at how the series was recreated, the
trials and tribulations of getting the actors lined up (what really did
happen over Christopher Eccleston's exit? Find out here...) and a very
detailed episode guide with lots of detail, highlights of technical errors
and some wacky headings like how many times the Doctor said "Fantastic!" in
an episode and tracking the strange series arc of Bad Wolf.
Altogether a fun and effective companion for anyone who enjoys the show.
According to Amazon, the US paperback version of the book isn't available
until October 2007 - so you might be best getting it from Amazon.co.uk!
