Joe
Haldeman

Arguably the best exponents of the space
adventure, though this is by no means Haldeman's only skill. He came to fame with Forever
War, a poignant counter to the thoughtless killing of Heinlein's Starship Troopers. In
fact, Haldeman is sometimes closer to Heinlein than his fans might think, in that his
heroes often survive against great odds and are highly skilled, but there's more humanity
in a Haldeman hero, and the universe is a much stranger, much more convincing place.
Haldeman has won all the big awards of SF, and it's not surprising - he packs a lot of
detail into his books and is well worth pursuing.

Forever War.

The one that kicked it all off. It's particularly apt with
Heinlein's Starship Troopers having been made into a blockbuster film, because this is
quite consciously a reworking of ST to have more real people and more likely situations.
Here there's no glory in killing, most engagements with the enemy are over in seconds, and
time dilation means that any survivors return to find the world so changed that they have
little choice but to re-enlist. In bare summary it sounds miserable, but it's not -
there's even a happy ending, at least for the survivors.
Mindbridge

Much of the feel of Forever War, but a less warlike story.
Tamers go out to make hostile worlds inhabitable. We follow a tamer through his career,
taking in the discovery of a strange creature that can produce a telepathic link between
two people and a very alien creature whose first response is to kill the tamers on sight -
because that's what is expected of them. Like Forever War, shows how difficult it is to
predict development of technology - the instellar action starts in the 1990s. Sadly in
the 'difficult to find' category.
Dealing in Futures

A collection of short stories that provides a good demonstration of Haldeman's
flexibility. They vary from a 50 page novella to poetry, with a solid collection of shorts
in between. One came from the original Forever War, which was removed before publication
as a book. Others range from the whimsical to the hard SF. Good stuff.
