Bob
Shaw

Born in Belfast but latterly living in England,
Bob Shaw has managed to keep up a steady production of good, readable, thoughtful science
fiction for many years. In his time he has produced some excellent idea driven fiction -
try Other Days, Other Eyes - some excellent people-centred stuff, like his
delightful wooden spaceships sagas, and of late humour too. To illustrate his range, Dark
Night in Toyland covers SF, fantasy and horror - and it's all good stuff.

Orbitsville

Fleeing Elizabeth Lindstrom's anger at the death of her son,
Vance Garamond, a flickerwing commander, leaves the solar system far behind.
Pursued by Earth's space fleet, Garamond finds a vast, alien-built spherical
structure which might just change the destiny of the human race.

Other Days, Other Eyes.
Shaw's masterpiece of idea fiction, this book takes the
brilliant concept of slow glass - glass that takes months or even years for light to
travel through - and explores the consequences from window farms overlooking beautiful
views to windows as witnesses to murder. It's great stuff. We are now even
seeing a technology that might make slow glass possible! See
Light Years for more details.

The Ragged Astronauts.

A delightful concept - faced with a terrible plague, a low technology world
with no metal conceives of a daring plan of evacuation to their sister world, so close in
orbit that their atmospheres intermingle. These are astronauts with a difference - using
hot air balloons. Excellent stuff. New 25 April 1998
The Wooden Spaceships.

A sequel to The Ragged Astronauts, this book sees the sister world under
dual threat - from invasion by the mutated remainder of the population of the home world
and a much stranger attack from an unexpected direction. The detail of dog-fights in space
using wooden jets is wonderful.

A Wreath of Stars.

Ironically, for
Gilbert Snook, who considered himself the human equivalent of a neutrino, it
all started with the panic that followed the sighting of an anti-neutrino
planet as it approached Earth. Snook ended up teaching English to African
miners, and the the miners started seeing ghosts.
