Frank Herbert

Herbert wrote a fair number of science fiction novels, most of which did not get beyond the mid-ranks. But the Dune sequence, particularly the masterful original was an unparalleled feat of writing.

Few science fiction books have had the same impact as Dune. If your only experience is the film, forget it - the book is a whole different ball game. Herbert conjours up the complexity of a future culture beautifully, making a superb melange of existing influences. The detail of the book and the subtly interwoven themes will delight you for many readings. If Dune isn't on your shelf, it ought to be.  New 1 September 1999

Published 1 September, 1972 The sequel to Dune was inevitably a bit of a let down after the stunning original. However it merits re-reading, and there enough new delights to make it stand up in its own right. The direction taken by the central character is much darker than in the first book (hence an excess of agonising) but still great.

P Children of Dune Visit bookstore Visit bookshop
Published 1 March, 1978 Third in line, once more Herbert manages to bring in enough delightful strangeness to make you read on and on. Focussing on the children of Paul, the hero of the first two books, some of the twists and turns will surpris and fascinate you. Rather too much philosophising between the action, and you may like me be irritated at the way a heroine from the previous book has become chief baddy, but there is plenty of action and thought provoking development.
