J. K. Rowling

Joanne Rowling, this unique phenomenon of modern writing shares with the rest of us a total bewilderment of just what has made the Harry Potter phenomenon such a global success. There have certainly been better fantasies that straddle the children/adult reading boundaries - see Alan Garner or Madeleine L'Engle, for instance - but this shouldn't detract from the fact that Rowling's books are solidly crafted and a delight to read.

For a long time we ignored Rowling just because of this runaway popularity, but having had to read them for a piece of journalism, this proved to have been a mistake. If you are one of the few people who has so far resisted the temptation, it's time to give in. Harry Potter, as they used to say, rules, okay?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's [US - Sorcerer's] Stone. Visit bookstore Visit bookshop
The first of the Harry Potters. When it first came out no-one knew what was to come. Might even have seemed a bit derivative of the popular 'worst witch' series of books. But now we know how wrong we were. Like every child who has wondered if he or she is somehow different, Harry felt he didn't fit in. Now he discovers that he is very special indeed, and once he's a pupil at Hogwarts School his life will never be the same again.  New 23 July 2001

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.  Visit bookshop
The summer holidays are dragging on and Harry Potter can't wait for the fourth year at Hogwarts School. Harry is expecting the usual syllabus, but some quite unexpected events are lined up too. The chunky Harry blockbuster - no-one was sure if Rowling could sustain such a long book, but she does effortlessly.  New 23 July 2001

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

What everyone inevitably was asking was could she do it again? Like its predecessor in the series it's a big book and in places a very dark one - could Rowling keep the readers glued to the page. Remarkably enough, yes. Is it the best Potter book yet? You'll have to judge for yourself. Our assessment is not quite, but like Terry Pratchett, Rowling does seem to be able to very reliably (if rather slowly) turn out just what her readers are looking for. New 20 June 2003

What's a Christian to do with Harry Potter (by Connie Neal). Visit bookstore Visit bookshop
Not one of the Harry Potter books, but rather about the series. Particularly in the US there has been a backlash from some Christians who are concerned that the Harry Potter books portray witchcraft and dark forces in a positive light. This well-balanced book is useful for any thinking Christians who want to take a reasoned view rather than a reflex one.  New 30 August 2001
