Mervyn Peake

There's no doubting it - Peake was a one-off. His masterpiece, the Gormenghast trilogy lies somewhere between a fantasy and the caricature world of Dickens. His work gets stranger still when it is brought to the 'real' world in Mr Pye. In the end, you've just got to try it.

Peake was born in China in 1911 and was both an artist and a writer. He produced sketch illustrations for his works, but also illustrated a number of other classics, notably including Alice in Wonderland and the Hunting of the Snark. His gothic fantasy is quite unlike anything else.

The Gormenghast Trilogy - Visit bookstore Visit bookshop
All three of the books (see below for details) in a single volume. When we last checked, the US version was out of print.  New 3 August 2001

  Titus Groan -  Visit bookshop
The first of the Gormenghast trilogy sets the scene for the birth and institution of the 77th Earl of Groan, Titus. Here we meet Peake's kaleidoscopic range of bizarre characters - Steerpike, Barquentine, Lady Fuschia, Lord Sepulchrave, Countess Gertrude,  Doctor Prunesquallor and his sister Irma, Swelter, Mr Flay, Nanny Slagg and more. But more than all of these there is the character of the castle itself that dominates this amazing fantasy. New 3 August 2001

  Gormenghast -  Visit bookshop
In the second part of the trilogy, Titus grows up into his new role. But he is restless in this cobwebbed kingdom of crumbling towers, ivied quadrangles, dank passages and battlements elbow-deep in moss. And an evil force is arising in the castle, subverting the ancient rituals and aiming to overthrow and kill. Remarkable stuff. New 3 August 2001

Gormenghast -  Visit bookshop

 Titus Alone -  Visit bookshop
In the third part of the trilogy Titus ventures out from Gormenghast into the wider world. This is a strange mixture of reality and fantasy. There's a whole new mix of characters and fascinating situations, but somehow it doesn't work quite as well as its predecessors.  New 3 August 2001.

Titus Alone -  Visit bookshop

  Mr Pye -  Visit bookshop
A lighter hand than Gormenghast, this fantasy set in the 'real' world is equally well populated with strange characters and odd situations. Mr Pye comes to the Island of Sark with a mission, to convert the islanders into a crusading force for undiluted good. However he is prone to excess, and this excess is nearly his downfall.  New 3 August 2001
