Ray
Bradbury

Bradburys science fiction is like nothing
else. His closest to pure SF is Fahrenheit 451, but most of his books, even those
with apparent science fiction content like The Martian Chronicles and The
Illustrated Man, veer into fantasy. Hes at his best when conjuring up the fears
and delights of small town boyhood as in the wonderful Something Wicked This Way
Comes.

Fahrenheit 451
-

One of the few science fiction novels taken seriously by the literary types, F451
has a haunting quality like all Bradbury's best work. In his cosy totalitarian future,
firemen cause fires, not put them out. Houses are fireproof: their job is to burn books.
But what happens when a fireman, tired of the full-wall TV, starts to read and becomes
obsessed with a woman who knows about books?
The Martian Chronicles
-

One of Bradbury's best known books, yet one of his least approachable. The trouble
with TMC is that it's written as if it's science fiction, but it's really fantasy. The
Mars that features in these often unlinked short stories is more a place of our dreams
than physical reality. As usual, there's plenty of examination of the nature of human
longing. Worth getting into.
The Illustrated Man
-

A wonderful conceit: a tattooed man whose tattoos come alive, each telling a
different story. Without this linking theme this would still be an excellent collection,
ranging from the loneliness of space, to the savagery of children, but the theme gives it
an extra something.
Something Wicked This
Way Comes -

The ultimate Bradburyian tale on the edge of horror, whimsy and fantasy
- a must-have. When Cooger & Dark's Pandemonium Shadow Show comes to town, the life of two boys will never
be the same. Has all the best qualities of a nightmare. Only beaten for concentrated atmosphere
by the works of Gene Wolfe.
Vintage Bradbury -

One of Ray Bradbury's specialities is the piquant short story
- and this is about his best general collection. Go for it!
