The Shockwave Rider
Arguably Brunner's best, Shockwave Rider combines the rather miserable environment of a bad news novel like Stand on Zanzibar with a sizzling adventure storyline that manages to give it an upbeat feel despite the surroundings. One of the reasons the novel works so well (apart from the prefiguring of the then unimagined Internet) is the way the background is based on the predictions of Alvin Toffler's non-fiction bestseller, Future Shock. Toffler remarked at the time: "When John Brunner first told me of his intention to write this book, I was fascinated -- but I wondered whether he, or anyone, could bring it off. Bring it off he has -- with cool brilliance. A hero with transient personalities, animals with souls, think tanks and survival communities fuse to form a future so plausibly alive it has twitched at me ever since." The hero, Nickie Haflinger uses his expertise with the data network to manipulate reality and his identity according to the system, but even his skills are pushed to the limit to survive...
