Pratchett's latest, Night Watch, is an outstanding book that proves he can be more than a clever joker.

Like some of the other great Discworld novels it's not quite so packed with humour - but it more than makes up by being  richer, more human in content, with more genuine suspense and thrills. Don't worry, though - it is still funny.

In Night Watch, Sam Vimes, Commander of the Watch, whose wife is about to give birth to their first child, is sucked back 30 years in time, accompanied by an evilly innocent appearing mass murderer. This was a crucial period in the history of the city, a time that has special memories for Vimes. He has to decide how to treat his presence and its potential for changing the past.

As well as the main theme, this gives Pratchett a great opportunity to build a back story for many of the characters who are familiar from other Discworld books. It's hard to say why, but it works and it works brilliantly.
