Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
J. K.
Rowling

It should hardly be a shock to anyone who
hasn't just landed from Mars - but the latest Harry Potter has hit the
streets. It's something of a mark of the remarkable success of these books
that 7,500 copies were stolen from a warehouse in England - a doubtful
compliment, maybe, but still a compliment.
What everyone inevitably was asking was
could she do it again? Like its predecessor in the series it's a big book
and in places a very dark one - could Rowling keep the readers glued to
the page. Remarkably enough, yes. Okay there's some evidence of padding
(very little happens in the first 100 pages) which makes you wonder if she
was asked for a longer book still, everyone's rather miserable for most of
the book, and the street entrance to the Ministry of Magic is straight out of
Get Smart, but even so it works. The hallmark Rowling twist in the
tail is perhaps not as dramatic as some (especially as we've all been told
a major character is to be killed) - but the book still has the power to
grip, and the last 150 pages are so are classic Rowling page-turners.
Is it the best Potter book yet? You'll have
to judge for yourself. Our assessment is no, there are just too many pages
of Rowling's usual 'things go wrong when people don't communicate' message, but like Terry Pratchett,
Rowling does seem to be able to very reliably (if rather slowly) turn out
just what her readers are looking for.
