Isaac Asimov

The book subtitle reads 'his epic Foundation series: the final chapter'. It's true that this was the last Foundation book written, but it comes chronologically second in the saga. This late writing gives it more depth than many of Asimov's earlier books. As usual in the Foundation series, it's a touch wordy, with plenty of discussion, but here we see the critical time when Hari Seldon, inventor of psychohistory, painstakingly puts the planks into place to make the two Foundations possible.

Painstaking's the word - it's a case of one step forward, two steps back as all sorts of hazards intervene, but the outcome is satisfying. As with all Asimov's later written Foundation books, there's a subtle interweaving of the robot stories too.
