Science Fiction or fantasy and creativity often go hand-in-hand, but if you want to see what happens when you really give reign the creative stuff (and we're talking the hard stuff here), there's no one comes near the comic madness of Robert Rankin.

He is best known for the Brentford Trilogy and its successors (click on his name for more details), but arguably his most perfect work is this superb confection, bringing together as it does a post-holocaust world, aliens who spend all their time watching Earth on TV, the young Elvis Presley, a time travel sprout, the Dalai Lama and a surprise character from a quite remarkable family (you'll certainly have heard of her brother and her dad). Makes a fascinating comparison with the Pratchett/Gaiman comedy about the end times, Good Omens, which strangely also features Elvis.

Like Terry Pratchett, Rankin manages to take humour (very different humour), mix in horror and produce a result that's both hilarious and still works as a sharp-edged story. You'll never have read anything like it. If this takes your fancy there are two sequels: They Came and Ate Us - Armageddon II, the B movie (Amazon.co.uk) and The Suburban Book of the Dead - Armageddon III, the remake  (Amazon.co.uk)
