The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse
They broke the mould when they made Robert Rankin - he is truly unique. Rankin's fantasies combine awful jokes, stock phrases and characters that are difficult to like - but at the same time his books are so unusual, fantastic (in the original sense) and wonderful that you don't care. The more of them you read, the more you love them. Reading the best Rankin is akin to living through an enjoyable but very strange dream - it's Alice in Wonderland for modern adults, and never more so than with The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse. Rankin is never one to let a good twisted phrase go - Armageddon, the Musical had another incarnation before the book of that name, and The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies feature in one or more of Rankin's Brentford books as a heavy rock band - here, however, they are the calling cards of a serial killer, working his way through a range of well-known fairy tale characters. An inversion of the Rankin norm - usually it's a case of weird characters and happenings being contrasted alongside very everyday people and places. Here the setting is downright weird, but often there's something very familiar about the way the characters react. Great as ever. Robert Rankin is highly prolific and it was, frankly quite difficult to choose which of his superb books to feature. Take a look at our thoughts on his other work on our Robert Rankin page.
