Alan Garner is one of the greatest writers of children's fantasy alive. He weaves a complex mixture of reality and the magic of place, tied strongly to his Cheshire roots. In this rare foray into adult writing, Garner produces what could be seen as a pure work of historical fiction. It tells the story of William Buckley, a bricklayer from rural Cheshire who was arrested and transported to Australia in the 1790s. He vows to his girl that he will return, and escapes from the settlement with the unfortunate notion that Australia is connected by land to the rest of Asia, and so expects to travel North to China then turn left to return home. This would be a fascinating enough tale in its own right - but this is Garner at work, and so there is a strange intertwining of the rituals that kept magic ritual alive in 18th century Cheshire and the magic of the Australian aborigines, who take in Buckley as one of their own. The book takes a little patience - at times at least one word in four makes no sense because it is based on a dialect or a different language. But provided you are prepared to make the effort to interpolate, Garner's graphic prose and rich ritual imagination makes this a mix of historical wonder and a trip into the mind.
