Cities in Flight
James Blish

|
|

Not available
from Amazon.com, but
it only costs a few dollars more to get it NOW from the UK... |
Arguably the greatest space
opera ever written, Blish's breadth of vision is quite remarkable. The
earth is running out of resources, so the great cities of the world take
off into the void, surrounded by a forcefield bubble and powered by
spindizzies - one of the most impressive bits of pseudo-science around.
There are a few things to bear
in mind. This was originally four separate books, the second of which was
aimed at teenagers, while the remaining three had an adult audience in mind,
so there are a couple of gear changes. Also it does date back to the 1950s,
so don't look for great characterisation or expect the technology to all
make sense... but these are trivial points if you're prepared to suspend
disbelief and go along for the ride.
The star of the book is the city
of New York, following its ups and downs through the centuries, as the book
has a huge span - literally to the end of the universe and beyond. If you
like old-style SF and haven't got this book (or the original subtitles
They Shall Have Stars, A Life for the Stars, Earthman Come Home and A
Clash of Cymbals), it's a must have.
