Choir of the United Benefice of Lyddington and Wanborough, and Bishopstone
with Hinton Parva We are a small but growing choir, based in four villages a few miles east of Swindon in Wiltshire (UK). Currently the choir's main involvement is evensong, singing at one of the four churches in rotation each Sunday. We also have regular joint events with the choir of St. Nicholas Newbury (the picture below is at Newbury on a joint choral evensong):
The choir is open to all - we have members from school age all the way through to 80s - if you live in the area and are interested in singing, please do get in touch. Contacting usIf you want to find out more, please contact the choirmaster, Brian Clegg, at brian@cul.co.uk PracticesAre on Thursday evening at 7pm, usually for 1 hour at St. Andrew's, Wanborough. ServicesEvensong is sung at 6pm on Sundays as follows:
Evensong is normally sung with chanted Mag & Nunc, Ferial responses and an anthem about once a month, but fully choral on special occasions. On a roughly monthly basis we sing at the morning communion (10.30am) instead of evensong. The choir also sings at weddings in the benefice - attending choir members receive a small fee. Special eventsEach term we have some special services, for major church festivals like Easter and Christmas, and also slightly different services like Songs of Praise. We are also involved in external singing, including our regular joint evensongs with Newbury, and diocesan events which have taken members of the choir to the bishop's installation in Swindon, and RSCM festivals in Bristol cathedral. Voice for LifeOptionally, members can take the Voice for Life training scheme from the Royal School of Church Music. Open to young members and adults, this is a structured self-run course which will help you to understand the basics of music and of singing. The course has a number of levels - after completion of a level, the choir member is able to wear a medal with the appropriate coloured ribbon. There's no pressure to take the course, but if you would like to broaden your knowledge of music and singing this is an ideal (and free!) opportunity.
