Carols Ancient and Modern - Ancient and Modern has always been the poor cousin of church music, beaten musically by English Hymnal and Carols for Choirs. However, the latest versions have finally thrown off a lot of the past and come up with an excellent and musical collection. A total of 116 carols for congregations and choirs with full music, words only and electronic versions, the book is available direct from A&M with discounts/grants if you want a full set.

Combines all the congregation standards with a good range of choir carols. One or two missing favourites - I'd have liked to have seen the Darke In the Bleak Midwinter, Bethlehem Down and a couple of Rutters, but still the most comprehensive single volume carol book. One slight criticism - the music edition is relatively small: this makes it easy to hold, but does mean the music is quite small print.

The HymnCDs site has recorded a set of accompaniments for the book available on CD or to download.

New Oxford Book of Carols: the definitive carol book if you want to dig into the detail of each carol. Music and texts of 201 carols for the Christmas season (many in more than one setting), each with copious notes on historical background and performance. An extensive general introduction gives an overview of the history of the carol, and there are a number of appendices dealing with specific areas of the repertory. The book's approach is an attempt to rediscover the native vitality of material that has sometimes been debased and sentimentalized, by means of `authentic' period settings and a concern for historically informed performance. Not really a book to perform from, it's too big, but great to choose carols and get information for programme notes.
